Today, 14 November 2016, is an auspicious and beneficial day for practice for several reasons.
First of all, it is a full moon day. During the full moon, any spiritual practice, meditation, yoga, breath work,... will have more impact because on this day our channels are more open, allowing the subtle breath to go deeper into the secondary channels. The positive energy that we are going to infuse into our channels as a result of the practice will thus be preserved when they close, allowing it to remain there until the next Full Moon. It is therefore beneficial to practice during the days of the Full Moon, and this one is all the more beneficial as the Moon will be closer to the Earth today, so its influence will have more effect. Indeed, the Moon moves in an eliptical manner around our planet and it is only every 70 years that it passes close to the Earth.
The practice is also beneficial on this day because it marks the 15th day of the lunar month, which corresponds to the birthday of Amitabha Buddha. In Vajrayana Buddhism, Amitabha Buddha is one of the 5 Wisdom Buddhas, each representing one of the components of the wisdom mind, Amitabha Buddha being the representation of loving-kindness, compassion. It is therefore essential to practise meditation, reading the sutras, and other spiritual practices because on this day, the effects of all our actions are multiplied by 100,000.
In addition, the 15th day of the 9th lunar month is known for its unparalleled miracles. It was on this day that Shakyamuni Buddha decided to descend from the heavens of Tushita, where he had been for three months, in order to give teachings to beings in that state of perception. The heavens, in Buddhism, are to be understood as a spiritual state, or vibratory state. And it will be 7 days later, on the 22nd day of the 9th lunar month, that Shakyamuni Buddha then made the descent from Tushita to return to teach the disciples of our present state of perception. On the 22nd day of the 9th lunar month, it is said that our merits will be multiplied by 100 million times. It will therefore also be a very important day of practice.
The 15th day of the lunar month is also the day of Kalachakra. It is indeed on a full moon day that the Buddha delivered his Kalachakra teaching and these full moon days are considered to be beneficial for those who practice this tantra.
It is also during this beneficial day that the Eight Mahayana Precepts are taken for 24 hours, which consist of a set of vows to be observed from the time they are taken at sunrise until sunrise the following day.
